Thanks Duncan for going through this again.
It was good to meet again at Shepherds Dene and give the network the boost that comes from direct contact.
I was wondering if it is possible to post documents to the Blog so that they would become available to those who were interested but not inconvenience those who weren't.
Anyone know if this is possible?

Tying in PA research into bids

I'm not sure if anyone is still using the blog, but I'm looking to write in researching the effectiveness of PA methods into a current bid. This would be to help give PA a more prestigious name. The bid at the moment is to run a forum theatre project, and use PA to monitor and evaluate it.

I'm about to draft this out, but as it was spoken at the last PPfC meeting, I thought someone might be able to other suggestions of how to go about this - maybe examples of how this has been written in before, or key phrasing.

Participatory Democracy case studies

Thanks to Peter for getting a sample case study and a proforma out on this. I thought it was really useful - very straightforward and succinct. Would like to suggest an additional heading though (although loath to add any complexicity to it) about impact; I read the case study and wondered whether there had been any referenda - if so what on and what was the outcome; what difference has it it made?

PA Case Studies Workshop January 27th 2005

Purpose of event:
To share examples of PA in action, whether positive or negative; to deepen learning about what works/doesn’t work and why; to capture those examples in case study format.

Preparation required:
Draft case study using the format template
Bring a laptop to the event if in a position to do so.

Outputs:
A series of case studies in a common format that can be used as evidence of how PA can contribute to good practice and to influence policy and decision making.

Agenda
10.00-10.30
Introductions and outline for day: purpose & structure

10.30-11.15
Small groups: First sharing of case study stories; Work in 3s to ‘interrogate’ the stories and deepen the analysis
Small groups appoint facilitator to take them through process and keep things moving.
See how many stories there are in the group; Divide into morning and afternoon blocks, but with more in the am than pm.
Work in 3s to develop the analysis
Write-up onto pro-forma before lunch

Short plenary to catch any insights so far into the format/process

Good to see a few posts. I must admit i've had to remind myself to log on, rather than being bombarded by emails, but hey...! Re the case studies, perhaps we encourage people to bring examples, but don't make it conditional - some people (like here) might just want to lurk and learn?! Birmingham sounds fine.

Re this blog - is it time to 'invite' everyone who had been invited to the Oxfam event(s)? Anyone object?

And how did the meeting with involve go? Do we have some principles now...?!!!

Hi all

Myself and Jo talked yesterday and are looking at moving on a Case Studies "event". We are looking at the idea of proformas so if anyone has any comments please say.

Other points were the venue - Birmingham?
Would everyone have to bring a case study or not be allowed to attend?
who to invite - PPforC, Oxfam Training the Trainers group and ?????????

thanks for a good two days, great to be with people who are passionate about PA etc. I have to apologise that I have not yet written to my local newspaper but it is on my list!

Thanks Duncan - it's working! Well I was inspired to be part of the 2nd retreat and to meet everyone. One of the 'actions' I'd like to take is to set up a London PA network. I would be great to discuss this with the London-based retreaters, M&S-ers and find a constructive way to set up and run this.

Good to see you all last week - It was last week wasnt it?

Myself and Megan had a really good chinwag on the way home. We have decided to do some joint training on a) facilitation with Groundwork staff and b) PA principles and practice with Groundwork and CFSN staff - all this hopefully by December but it may be January. We are going to work on getting others on the Participation Cymru board - ie ME! so that its another network opportunity and we are going to work towards a more formal seminar in Wales in and around May...... that's for starters.

Keith, I believe is going to talk to his crowd in West Midlands and then invite me to talk with the Groundwork UK discussions so its all go.... and just the small part-time job I have too - that's going well. I'll shut up now. Dont want to use all the memory on this first attempt!

Thanks to John for his summary of purpose and principles - I'm sure it'll get tweaked between us, but Charotte's one-pager will be a lot easier for it. Hope everyone's remembered we agreed to comment to Charlotte swiftly! Let's see if this Blog thing works!
As to names, my personal preference is for 'change' over 'action' on the grounds that you can have a lot of action that goes nowhere!

Thanks, Duncan, for setting this up.

The name (PPC) is what we settled on but I put a number of alternatives in the top line of the thing on Principles. Sorry about that.

I'm more concerned about the name of what we do and P/A is not really a solution. PLA is an accurate description but is already owned. PA is not very happy either. hmmmm, what's in a name?

I wonder if this blog thing is going to work, I hope so

I'll be very impressed if this worked! If it did, and you are reading this, then welcome! Currently I have only had time to send invitations to those of you who attended the second (most recent) event. I presume we want to include those who made it to the first. Do we also want to include all those who have been invited to the S&M events (so to speak)? I'm away in sunny South Wales until Thursday - if there is any consensus by the time i return, i'll act on it!
